About This Access Site
Heart Butte Reservoir, also known as Lake Tschida, is a 3,400-acre impoundment on the Heart River in Grant County, North Dakota. This is the only sizable body of water in the Heart River area and serves as a popular recreation hub for the region. The reservoir has a maximum depth of 58 feet and offers ample opportunity for kayaking, canoeing, and recreational boating in a scenic landscape.

The Johnson Ford access point is one of 10 boat ramps available around the lake, providing convenient entry to this expansive water body. The lake supports a variety of summer activities including boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming, and picnicking, with 10 campground areas distributed around the reservoir. The area is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation's Dakotas Area Office. Anglers frequent the lake using crankbaits, jigs, and spinners to target resident fish populations.

For paddlers and boaters planning to visit, be aware that multiple access points exist around the lake, so you can choose the ramp location that best suits your itinerary. Check conditions before launching, as reservoir water levels and weather can affect boating safety.
