About This Access Site
Heart Butte Reservoir, also known as Lake Tschida, is a 3,400-acre impoundment on the Heart River in Grant County, North Dakota. This is the primary recreational water body in the region, managed by the Bureau of Reclamation's Dakotas Area Office. The reservoir features a maximum depth of 58 feet and offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and motorized boating across its scenic landscape.

The Johnson Ford access point is one of 10 boat ramps serving the lake, providing convenient entry for paddlers and boaters. The area supports a range of summer activities including boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, and picnicking. Ten campground areas are also distributed around the lake, making it suitable for multi-day trips. The reservoir is popular with anglers targeting crankbaits, jigs, and spinners, so expect some fishing traffic during peak seasons.

Before launching, confirm current conditions and any seasonal restrictions with the Bureau of Reclamation's Dakotas Area Office, as water levels and access may vary. The presence of multiple access points provides flexibility if one location is unavailable, making Heart Butte Reservoir a reliable destination for paddlers seeking a substantial, well-developed water body in North Dakota.
