About This Access Site
Helmick Run provides boat ramp access to Mount Storm Lake, a scenic impoundment on the Stoney River in the Grant County highlands near Bismarck, WV. The ramp is located near the dam and can be accessed via US Route 50 to WV 42 to WV 93. This is a public access point leased by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources from Dominion Energy, offering parking and launching facilities for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats.

Mount Storm Lake is an excellent destination for various water activities, including paddling, fishing, jet skiing, and windsurfing. The lake has no wake zones or speed restrictions, so expect to encounter motorized traffic. The surrounding area sits atop the Allegheny Plateau and is near the Dolly Sods Scenic Area, offering beautiful highland scenery. Note that the boat ramp and parking area historically close seasonally (typically June through August) for maintenance improvements, so check current conditions before planning your trip. The nearby Red Creek Campground provides primitive camping options for those seeking an overnight adventure in this unique high-elevation region.
