About This Access Site
Located on the east side of Lake Altus-Lugert near Lone Wolf, the Hick's Mountain Road access features a two-lane concrete boat ramp with paved parking, making it a reliable launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The ramp sits mid-lake, providing good access to the 6,500-acre water body. This is part of the larger Quartz Mountain Resort recreation area, which offers comprehensive facilities including multiple boat ramps, camping, RV hookups, and a full range of amenities.

Lake Altus-Lugert, formed by a dam on the North Fork Red River, supports diverse fishing with largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, catfish, hybrid striped bass, and white bass available year-round. Beyond fishing, the lake is popular for general paddling, sightseeing, and water sports. Nearby Quartz Mountain Lodge provides lodging, dining, and additional recreation options including an 18-hole golf course and swimming beaches.

The surrounding Altus-Lugert public hunting area encompasses 3,600 acres at the upper end of the lake, with designated camping and picnic facilities throughout. Before launching, paddlers should check current water conditions and review any seasonal restrictions related to the hunting area. The facility's concrete ramp and parking make it accessible for various watercraft types and experience levels.
