About This Access Site
Hooten Town Access marks the upstream end of the James River's special black bass management area and offers a convenient launch point for paddlers and boaters exploring this large, scenic Ozark river. The site features a boat ramp and large parking lot, making it suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorized vessels. This is a day-use-only facility with no camping allowed. Located near Crane, Stone County, the access is reached by taking Route U southwest 1.40 miles from Jamesville (at Routes M and U junction), then south on Hooten Town Road for 0.50 mile, and east on Loop Road about 100 feet to the parking area on the north side of the road.

The James River at this location is a substantial waterway—a large river (Stream Order 7) with an average flow of approximately 668 cubic feet per second and moderate current of about 2.4 feet per second. The river's average gradient of 1 foot per mile creates gentle, manageable flowing conditions suitable for various skill levels. Paddlers should expect clear Ozark waters characteristic of this region, with nearby Wilson's Creek National Battlefield offering historical interest for those exploring the area.
