Located on Highway 30 just east of Astoria, the John Day access site offers a well-maintained 54-acre facility with a public boat launch, flush restrooms, ample parking, and grassy areas. The large parking lot can fill up quickly during fishing season, so arriving early is recommended. The site features interpretive signage about the nearby Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 20 islands and stretches over 27 miles of the Columbia River.
This is an excellent put-in point for exploring the John Day River and lower Columbia River system. Paddlers should note that an **Oregon Waterway Access Permit is not required during High Season** (May 1–July 15 between Service Creek and Tumwater Falls, and September onward between Cottonwood Bridge and Tumwater Falls). During Low Season, a permit is required. The site provides boating information at the river's edge to help you plan your trip. Nearby Lewis and Clark National Historical Park offers opportunities to explore the region's natural beauty and rich Native American heritage.
