About This Access Site
John F. Spalding Recreation Area offers a convenient boat launch onto Mark Twain Lake near Hatch, Missouri. Located 17 miles west of Hannibal on Highway 36, this day-use facility provides direct access to the lake and is the only recreation area with a sandy public beach nearby. The boat ramp is operational when lake elevation exceeds 625 msl (mean sea level), so water levels may vary seasonally. Paddlers should note that alcohol is not permitted on the beach or in the lower picnic area.

Beyond water recreation, the site serves as a trailhead for the scenic 32-mile Joanna Trail system, featuring three loops (4, 11, and 5 miles) suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The area is well-positioned for exploring the Mark Twain Lake region, with nearby campgrounds offering full hookup facilities for overnight stays. For specific current conditions, ramp status, or to make reservations at the campground, contact the facility at 573-735-4097.
