About This Access Site
Located on Route 112 in Richmond, the John (Jay) Cronan River Access is a convenient launch point on the Pawcatuck River, serving as both a boat ramp and fishing access area. This site provides good access for paddling trips on the upper and middle sections of the river and serves as a take-out point for paddlers coming downstream. The ramp can accommodate both kayaks and canoes, though boaters should be mindful of keeping the ramp clear for vehicle trailers.

Paddlers should be aware of several downstream obstacles before launching. The Kenyon rock ramp can be run by experienced paddlers or portaged, while Horseshoe Dam requires portaging. The rapids below the removed Lower Shannock Dam should be portaged by all but expert paddlers. Downed trees occasionally block passage on the Pawcatuck River, so paddlers may encounter sections requiring portaging around or lifting over obstacles. For current conditions and to report blockages, contact the Pawcatuck Watershed Partnership Association.

The access point is near the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge and Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, offering opportunities to explore protected wildlife areas in the region.
