About This Access Site
Johnson Lake offers a boat ramp near Ely in St. Louis County, providing access to this scenic water body in the Superior National Forest area. The nearby Inlet Campground on the west side features 31 camper pads with electrical hookups and 10 non-designated sites, making it a convenient base for paddlers and boaters. The facility includes a handicap-accessible fishing pier and bank fishing opportunities.

This access point serves as a gateway to backcountry paddling and camping in the region. A backcountry campsite is available on Johnson Lake itself on a first-come, first-served basis, equipped with a fire grate, latrine, and picnic table. Paddlers should note that all water requires treatment or boiling, food must be hung, and fire should be completely extinguished when leaving camp. The area is suitable for both day trips and overnight adventures for kayakers, canoeists, and motorized boaters.
