The Montgomery Access boat ramp provides convenient launching access to the Kanawha River in Montgomery, Kanawha County. This is a well-established public access point serving kayakers, canoeists, and motorized boaters looking to explore this major West Virginia waterway. The ramp is located just north of town on Bailey Road (WV Route 4/3)—watch for brown directional signs from WV Route 6 to find it.
From this access point, paddlers can explore the Kanawha River's navigable channels in both directions. Downstream lies the Marmet Pool, which provides a maintained 9-foot navigable channel extending 15 miles to London Dam near Belle, WV. Upstream access flows toward the London Pool and eventually Kanawha Falls. The river is popular with both flat and touring paddlers, as well as anglers targeting catfish in the pools created by the locks and dam system.
Before launching, check current water conditions and be aware that the Kanawha is an industrial river with barge traffic and dam operations. The pools provide relatively calm, manageable paddling compared to free-flowing sections, making this a good option for intermediate paddlers and families.
