The Kankakee Conservation Area provides convenient access to the Kankakee River near Wilmington, with a boat ramp located just west of Warner Bridge Road and north of Warner Bridge on the Will/Kankakee county line. This is one of two primary launch points in the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area, which offers 12 miles of river access suitable for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating. There are no launch fees, making it an accessible option for paddlers of all experience levels.
The Kankakee River in this section supports good fishing for smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and Northern pike, though paddlers should note the river's character and current conditions. Beyond the main river channel, the conservation area includes numerous ponds and wetlands open for exploration, along with excellent wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. The broader Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area provides additional amenities including shore access and trails for those interested in combining water activities with hiking or biking.
The location offers proximity to other regional attractions, including the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center (featuring lock and dam operations) and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, making it a good basepoint for a full day of recreation in the area.
