This boat ramp provides access to Kirwin Reservoir on the North Fork Solomon River in north-central Kansas, located approximately 4 miles west and 1 mile south of Kirwin, KS. The 10,778-acre refuge, established in 1954 as Kansas's first national wildlife refuge, offers paddling opportunities in a scenic valley surrounded by transitional prairie and grassland habitat. The North Fork Solomon River at this location is a substantial waterway with an average flow of approximately 113 cubic feet per second and relatively gentle gradient (6.6 ft/mile), making it manageable for most paddlers.
**Important access restrictions apply:** Boat launches are currently permitted only at Scout Cove (Bow Creek ramp), not at the East Xavier Road location. Boating is prohibited from October 1 through April 1 when lake elevation falls below 1,722 feet, except in the Scout Cove area. Fishing for walleye, bass, crappie, and catfish is permitted year-round. The refuge prioritizes wildlife and migratory bird conservation, so paddlers should expect wildlife viewing opportunities and should respect any posted regulations or seasonal closures. Check current conditions and access status before visiting, as water levels and restrictions may vary seasonally.
