The Lake Mattamuskeet Outfall Canal boat ramp provides access to the shallow, meandering waters of Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in Hyde County, North Carolina. This is one of two public boat ramps onto the lake, located near the refuge headquarters.
The lake itself is very shallow, making it best suited for small, shallow-draft boats like kayaks, canoes, and jon boats. Boating is permitted on the refuge from March 1 to October 31 each year. Paddlers and small boaters can explore the lake's network of canals, marshes, and open water areas, keeping an eye out for the diverse wildlife found throughout the refuge.
In addition to the boat ramp, the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge offers other recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Nearby, the Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge also provides access to coastal marshes and wilderness areas. Visitors should familiarize themselves with refuge regulations and be prepared for the shallow, slow-moving waters of this unique coastal ecosystem.
