About This Access Site
Lake Owyhee Dam provides access to Oregon's largest reservoir, a scenic 53-mile-long lake nestled in a dramatic desert canyon with striking volcanic rock formations. The dam access serves paddlers and boaters looking to explore this remote water body located approximately 50 miles south of Ontario in Malheur County. Several boat ramps are available at the northern end near the dam within a few miles of each other, making this a primary launching point for the reservoir.

**Access and Conditions:** Vehicle access to the dam area is limited to gravel roads serving Leslie Gulch, Dry Creek, and Red Butte. Note that the dam's boat ramp was not designed for public use and does not meet federal accessibility standards; the concrete access route is deteriorating due to wave erosion. For a more developed experience, Lake Owyhee State Park's Gordon Gulch Day-use Area, also on the reservoir, offers a maintained boat ramp, picnic facilities, and year-round access.

**Recreation Context:** This remote, high-desert reservoir offers excellent boating and fishing opportunities, with the narrow canyon and deep water creating a unique paddling environment. Given the remote location and limited road access, paddlers should plan accordingly with adequate supplies and navigation preparation. The lake's size and the colorful canyon landscape make it a worthwhile destination for those seeking solitude and scenic desert paddling.
