Lake Thompson Recreation Area offers a dedicated boat ramp in the southeast portion of the developed recreation area, making it a convenient access point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. Located 6 miles southwest of Lake Preston off US 14 in Kingsbury County, the facility includes multiple parking areas and amenities. Be aware that the ramp area can experience congestion, particularly during peak times when day-use areas and nearby campground loops are busy.
This scenic recreation area provides good support facilities for paddlers, including a fish-cleaning station and a lodge with supplies. The lake offers diverse fishing opportunities for walleye, northern pike, crappie, perch, and bass. Beyond boating, the area features a sandy beach, ski beach, playground, and a park tour trail for hikers and bikers. For specific information about ramp conditions, hours, parking fees, or current water levels, contact Lake Thompson Recreation Area directly at 605-847-4893 or LakeThompson@state.sd.us.
