Long Wharf Landing in Gloucester offers convenient access to the Jones River via multiple launch options suited for different craft and conditions. The site features a paved concrete boat ramp facing east (fairly steep) and a dirt ramp facing north, as well as a walk-in launch on the north side of the parking area that works particularly well for kayaks and canoes. Vehicle access extends directly to the seawall near the boat ramps, which is especially helpful at low tide.
Parking is free and available in the main lot or along the nearby main road, though walking distance varies with tidal conditions. The site is best used from April through October, and leashed dogs are permitted. Note that there are no facilities on-site. Paddlers should be aware of the tidal environment and plan their launch accordingly—the low-tide ramp access near the seawall may be preferable depending on water levels.
The site provides a gateway to exploring the Jones River estuary in the heart of the Essex National Heritage Area, just 10 miles north of Boston. Nearby, the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge offers additional paddling and wildlife viewing opportunities in diverse wetland and coastal habitats.
