Paddlers interested in nearby protected habitats can explore the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1941 and encompassing over 4,700 acres of upland and wetland habitats, sandy beaches, and dunes just south of Essex.
**Note:** If you're a non-resident paddler, you'll need to find alternative access points in the area, such as other landings on nearby rivers like the Annisquam.
