Maple Flats Access provides a public boat ramp and takeout point on the Castor River near Zalma in Bollinger County. This access site is conveniently located south of the Castor River Conservation Area and serves as an excellent endpoint for paddlers floating downstream from Sweetgum Access, which is located about 5-6 miles upriver.
**Important Note on Water Conditions:** The Castor River is not a perpetual flow river and is only navigable at or near flood stage—typically in the days immediately following significant rainfall. Paddlers should plan trips around rain events when water levels are adequate. When conditions are right, the river supports a diverse ecosystem including 35+ fish species (smallmouth and largemouth bass among them) and over 136 plant species in the surrounding area.
This access point works well as part of a day float trip when water levels permit, making it a practical takeout option for canoeists and kayakers. The nearby Mingo National Wildlife Refuge (21,592 acres) and Castor River Conservation Area offer additional outdoor recreation opportunities in the region.
