About This Access Site
The Mathews Brake National Wildlife Refuge (South) boat ramp provides access to the scenic Mathews Brake, a backwater lake within the refuge. This access point is ideal for kayakers, canoeists, and small motorized boats looking to explore the refuge's peaceful wetlands and hardwood forests.

To reach the boat ramp, travel approximately 100 yards past the first bridge and take the first paved road to the left (south). Continue for about half a mile and turn right onto the first gravel road. The paved boat ramp and parking area are located at the end of this gravel road. All access to the refuge, including the boat ramp, is by water only.

Mathews Brake is a large, slow-moving backwater area that offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The deep waters and surrounding bottomland hardwoods attract a variety of migratory and resident bird species throughout the year. Paddlers and boaters can expect calm, flat water conditions well-suited for leisurely exploration of the refuge's diverse wetland habitats.
