About This Access Site
This boat ramp provides access to the Mattawamkeag River in Penobscot County via Bellfield Road near Mattawamkeag. The launch is located by a bridge over the river and serves as a gateway to both lower and upper sections of the river system. From this access point, paddlers can explore 15 miles of undeveloped riverfront within Maine's Wildlife Management Area, characterized by scenic meadows, shrub lands, and abandoned farmland that support diverse wildlife.

The lower Mattawamkeag River below Kingman features challenging whitewater with rapids up to Class IV, making it suitable for experienced canoeists and kayakers seeking technical paddling. The upper sections offer calmer paddling opportunities and excellent wildlife viewing potential, including opportunities to spot moose, deer, and waterfowl along the shoreline. This area is ideal for multi-day trips that combine paddling with wildlife observation in a relatively undeveloped landscape.

**Directions:** From I-95 Exit 227, follow Access Road to ME-116, then take North Chester Road, Chester Road, and US-2 eastbound. Continue on US-2A for approximately 23 miles, then turn left onto Bellfield Road and travel 2.5 miles to the boat launch at the bridge.
