The Mexican Hat boat ramp provides access to the scenic San Juan River in southeastern Utah. This unimproved ramp is located at mile 83.4 of the river, just off Highway 163 on the eastern edge of the town of Mexican Hat.
The San Juan River in this section flows through a series of remote, dramatic canyons. Most paddling trips launch from either the Sand Island access point upstream or the Mexican Hat ramp, and take out at Mexican Hat or the Clay Hills boat ramp further downstream. The river is popular for multi-day float trips, with the segment from Sand Island to Mexican Hat being around 27 miles long.
At low water levels, it may be necessary to carry boats a short distance across a mudflat to reach the ramp. The ramp itself is unpaved, so paddlers should exercise caution when launching and loading their boats. Nearby amenities in Mexican Hat include gas stations and other services. Boaters and paddlers should plan accordingly for the remote character of this section of the San Juan River.
