The Gatesville Boat Ramp provides access to the Republican River just upstream of its confluence with the Smoky Hill River. Located directly south of the Smith Bottom Wetlands near Clay Center, this gravel ramp accommodates small boats and is suitable for kayaks and canoes. The take-out point is located on the north end of Milford Lake, making this a good shuttle option for paddlers.
The Republican River at this location is a large, flowing waterway (classified as a 7th-order stream) with an average flow of over 1,000 cubic feet per second and an average current velocity of 4.78 feet per second. Water from Milford Reservoir typically runs clear, though the Smoky Hill River—which joins here from the southwest—carries significant sediment load. Paddlers should be prepared for moderate current and typical river conditions.
This is a popular access point for short recreational paddles and fishing trips. The nearby Milford Lake area offers additional recreation opportunities, and the Milford Education Center and Fish Hatchery are located below the dam. Plan ahead, as this is a small gravel ramp with limited facilities; larger boats may not be suitable for launching here.
