North Eagle Creek provides boat access to Kentucky Lake, a major impoundment of the Tennessee River in Benton County, Tennessee. Kentucky Lake is one of the largest artificial lakes east of the Mississippi River, created by damming the Tennessee River. The Tennessee River system is a significant waterway with a drainage area of over 40,000 square miles and an average flow exceeding 69,000 cubic feet per second, making it a major navigable waterway suitable for various recreational boating activities.
The water body at this access point is a large reservoir lake environment rather than a flowing river, which creates calmer conditions than you would find on free-flowing portions of the Tennessee River. With an average water velocity of 7.66 feet per second in the main channel and a gentle slope of 0.8 feet per mile, Kentucky Lake provides relatively stable conditions for boating. The elevation change from the headwaters to this section of the Tennessee River system is substantial at over 500 feet, but the impoundment itself maintains fairly consistent water levels for recreation.
This is an ideal launch point for both motorized and non-motorized watercraft seeking access to Kentucky Lake. Boaters can expect encounter other recreational traffic, fishing activity, and potentially commercial barge traffic given the Tennessee River's commercial navigation status. The large drainage area feeding into Kentucky Lake means water levels can fluctuate seasonally, so checking current conditions before launching is recommended.
