About This Access Site
Payne Public Water Access provides boat launching facilities on Lake Madison in Madison, South Lake Dakota. The recently modernized access area features two launch ramps with docks, accessible parking, and amenities including a designated aquatic invasive species management lane and boat-trailer tie-down areas. This is a full-service public launch suitable for kayaks, canoes, motorboats, and sailboats. A daily or annual permit is required year-round to use the facility.

Lake Madison is a popular recreation destination with multiple access points around the lake. If the primary Payne ramp is experiencing issues, paddlers and boaters can use the alternative Payne Waterfowl Production Area ramp on the west end of the lake or Walker's Point Recreation Area. The nearby Madison Wetland Management District offers additional outdoor recreation opportunities in the area. Seasonal piers are removed during winter months, so plan accordingly depending on your visit timeframe.
