About This Access Site
This VFW-owned access site in Winslow provides convenient launching facilities for kayakers, canoeists, and small boats on the Pecatonica River. The site features EZ Docks designed specifically for personal kayak launches and general river access, making it particularly user-friendly for paddlers of all skill levels. The property also includes nearby amenities, with Junior's Place restaurant located in nearby Freeport at 1802 E Shawnee St.
The Pecatonica River in this area flows through a scenic landscape with farm fields and tree-lined banks. Paddlers should be aware that there are several portage points downstream, including a broken dam at Sumner Park (about 4-10 miles downstream, depending on your launch point) that requires a portage on the north/left side of the river. Additional dam portages exist further downstream at Brown's Mill near Freeport. This access point works well as a starting point for day trips or longer paddling excursions on the Pecatonica, which eventually merges with the Rock River near Macktown Forest Preserve.
