NC Highway 45 Bridge Access

The Water Street boat ramp in Plymouth provides convenient public access to the Roanoke River, a major waterway flowing 377 miles to the Atlantic. The facility features 2 launching lanes with courtesy docks and approximately 40 trailer parking spaces located at the corner of Monroe Street and W. Main Street. This is one of several public access points along the river in the Washington County area.

The Roanoke River at Plymouth is a substantial stream suitable for various watercraft, with an average flow of approximately 9,700 cubic feet per second and a gentle gradient of 3.2 feet per mile. Paddlers and boaters can expect a wide, slow-moving river ideal for recreational use in this section. The river's lower gradient makes it manageable for canoes and kayaks, though the significant average velocity suggests monitoring water conditions.

From this access point, paddlers can explore the scenic Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1989 to protect bottomland hardwoods and swamps. The refuge is best experienced by water, and this location serves as an excellent base for day trips and longer excursions. Additional public boat ramps are available upstream in Jamesville and Williamston for those planning extended paddles.
