Punaluu Beach Boat Ramp provides access to the Pacific Ocean on the Big Island of Hawaii. Located off Highway 11 just past the 55-mile marker, this boat launch is situated next to the ruins of an old pier. The ramp itself is relatively small, making it suitable for kayaks, canoes, and small powerboats.
Paddlers and boaters should be aware of the lava rocks that line much of the shoreline in this area. The best entry point is at the northeastern end of Punaluu Beach, where there are fewer rocks. Strong currents and surf conditions are common in the Pacific Ocean, so users should exercise caution and be prepared for challenging water conditions.
Day camping is permitted at the adjacent Punaluu Beach Park with a permit, but no animals, open fires, or removal of sand/rocks/plants is allowed. Nearby, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park offers opportunities to explore the unique geological and cultural landscapes of the Big Island.
