The Sagavanirktok River is a scenic, 180-mile long river in Alaska's North Slope region. The boat ramp and access site is located approximately 35 air miles east of Happy Valley, providing a convenient put-in point for paddlers and boaters.
The Sag River, as it's commonly known, originates in the Brooks Range and flows northward to the Beaufort Sea near Prudhoe Bay. It's characterized by a strong current and is navigable for around 70 river miles from the gravel bar access site down to the Dalton Highway Bridge. This stretch offers an excellent flatwater paddling and boating opportunity for experienced river users.
Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for the remote, arctic environment, with cold water temperatures, variable weather, and limited services along the river. Research river conditions, plan accordingly, and exercise caution when accessing and using this site. While facilities are limited, the Sagavanirktok River access provides a gateway to explore this wild, northern Alaskan waterway.
