About This Access Site
Sam Dale Lake is a 194-acre, IDNR-owned lake located five miles northwest of Johnsonville in northwestern Wayne County. The lake features two boat ramps and is largely surrounded by forest, providing a scenic paddling environment. Boats are limited to 10 horsepower on the lake, making it well-suited for kayakers, canoeists, and smaller recreational vessels. The relatively fertile, calm waters make this a good destination for paddlers seeking a peaceful experience.

The access site offers convenient amenities including boat docks, parking, and facilities within Sam Dale Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. Additional on-site amenities include picnic areas, shelters, playgrounds, and a concession stand. The area also features hiking trails, with a popular two-mile out-and-back trail along the southern portion of the lake. Boat rental options are available for visitors, making this location accessible whether you bring your own kayak or canoe or prefer to rent.
