Santa Cruz Lake offers a scenic paddling destination in the Santa Cruz River valley near Espanola. The lake features a boat ramp for easy water access and is ideal for kayakers and canoeists seeking a calm-water experience. **No motorized boats are allowed**, and all vessels must maintain trolling speed with no wake-producing activities permitted. Fishing for stocked trout is available, and amenities include picnic areas, shade trees, and outhouses near the ramp.
**Access & Important Restrictions:** From Espanola, take NM 76 east for 9.7 miles, turn right on NM 503 for 1.4 miles, then turn right onto Santa Cruz Lake Road (CR 98A). **Note: Vehicles with trailers longer than 30 feet are not permitted on Santa Cruz Lake Road due to tight turns.** The Recreation Area operates Thursday-Monday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (reopened February 15, 2025).
**Safety & Rules:** Swimming is prohibited due to dangerous underwater currents, though wading is allowed with shoes up to knee depth. A 14-day stay limit applies, and camping is not permitted near the shoreline. This quiet, non-motorized lake provides excellent paddling conditions for skill-building and leisurely exploration.
