Located on Big Coppitt Key at Mile Marker 11, Shark Key Wayside Park provides public access to Similar Sound and Hawk Channel in the heart of the Florida Keys. The facility features a single unpaved ramp with two lanes and approximately 20 parking spaces. This is a free, no-fee access point managed by Monroe County and is ideal for launching kayaks, canoes, and small boats into the shallow, protected waters of Similar Sound before venturing into Hawk Channel or the Atlantic Ocean.
Paddlers launching here will immediately enter the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, so be prepared to follow all sanctuary regulations including designated zones and speed restrictions. The nearby Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge offers excellent paddling opportunities for wildlife viewing, though visitors should maintain respectful distances from nesting areas. Note that conditions and facility status can change seasonally; contact Monroe County Parks and Beaches (305-453-8748) to confirm current access conditions and any operational updates before your visit.
