**Location & Access:** Shorters Wharf is a concrete boat ramp located on the Blackwater River in Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland. To reach the ramp, head south on Maples Dam Road from the intersection of Maples Dam Road and Key Wallace Drive—the ramp is 5.5 miles south on your right, just after the bridge.
**Paddling Conditions:** This is a popular launch point for exploring over 16 miles of scenic tidal marshes and waterways within Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Paddlers can expect excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including bald eagles, ospreys, herons, and muskrats. However, **tides significantly affect paddling conditions here**—plan your trip around tidal schedules, and be aware that road access to the ramp can flood during high tide. The refuge offers three marked paddle trails with maps available at the Visitor Center; a geospatial map is also available for the Avenza smartphone app. Winter paddlers should note that trails may be inaccessible during colder months. Do not exit your boat in the marsh to protect the sensitive habitat.
**Planning Tips:** Pick up a trail guide from the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center before launching. Time your visit for favorable tides and bring appropriate charts or GPS resources for navigation.
