Southwinds Marina South offers public boat ramp access to Amistad Reservoir, a large desert impoundment located about 30 miles northwest of Del Rio near Amistad Village. The ramp is suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorboats onto one of Texas's clearer lakes. Note that while the boat ramp is open to the public, camping facilities and some amenities at the marina are reserved for military and law enforcement personnel. Equipment rentals, including kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards, may be available through the marina.
Paddlers should be aware of potential parking constraints, particularly during busy periods. Plan to launch during daylight hours and arrive early, as overflow parking may be limited. The surrounding area offers access to Amistad National Recreation Area, a scenic desert recreation zone ideal for fishing, water sports, and exploring the international reservoir. Nearby campgrounds include Governors Landing, Rough Canyon, and Spur 406, which provide alternatives for those not eligible for on-site military camping.
