About This Access Site
**Access & Location:**
Sparks Lake provides a scenic day-use boat ramp located 26.2 miles west of Bend on Cascade Lakes Highway (OR-46), then 0.2 miles south on Forest Road 4600-400. A daily recreation fee ($5/vehicle) or annual pass is required. The ramp offers parking and access to a pristine alpine lake set against dramatic mountain views, with South Sister, the Three Sisters, and Mt. Bachelor dominating the surrounding landscape.

**Paddling & Boating:**
Sparks Lake is a clear, transparent alpine lake popular with kayakers and canoeists seeking scenic paddling. The lake is known for its exceptional water clarity—you can see the bottom from the surface throughout much of the lake. The water body is not particularly rich in size, but its calm waters make it ideal for paddling and wildlife viewing. The paved Ray Atkeson Loop Trail connects to the ramp, offering a scenic shoreline walk and excellent sunset viewing opportunities.

**Amenities & Camping:**
The day-use area includes picnic tables and restroom facilities, but no overnight camping is permitted at the ramp or day-use area. Nearby campground options include Soda Creek, Lava Lake, and Point Campground (all reservable), located within 10 miles. Dispersed boat-in camping is available at sites elsewhere on the lake for those seeking a backcountry experience.

Elk Lake has a picturesque setting, with the Three Sisters toweringover the north end of the lake and Mt. Bachelor dominating the eastern horizon. It is not a rich lake but is so transparent you can see the bottom clearly from any location on the surface. The kokanee are commonly 7 to 10 inches in length, not large but abundant, make excellent eating because of the cold water. These fish are mainly found at the south end of the lake near the lava flow where it is the deepest part and few kokanee are caught elsewhere on the lake. Night crawlers, eggs, and periwinkles; still fishing, wind drifting, and jigging. The water level at Elk Lake can fluctuate as much as 15 feet through the year, but the boat ramps remain usable. There are no obstacles to boating on the lake, and the few weed beds stay pretty short.Motorized and non-motorized boats are allowed on this body of water. For boat launch information see Elk Lake Boating Site, Little Fawn Boating Site , Point Campground and Elk Lake Resort.
