Located in North Utica along the Illinois River, this access point provides a convenient launch for paddlers and boaters exploring a major river system. The Illinois River at this location is a substantial waterway (Stream Order 9, averaging 27,210 cubic feet per second) with moderate current and a gentle gradient. The ramp benefits from nearby amenities including accessible restrooms, water fountains in the visitor center and lodge, and ample parking. The historic Starved Rock State Park setting offers a scenic paddling experience in one of the river's premier fishing stretches.
**Important Safety Considerations:** Do not venture within 600 feet of Starved Rock Dam due to extremely dangerous currents and undertows. Swimming and wading in the river are prohibited. The main ramp at Starved Rock provides an excellent upstream starting point; paddlers heading downstream should note an alternate public ramp 2.3 miles downriver on the upstream side of the locks, where they can also park. More adventurous boaters may run the locks to take out at the main Starved Rock ramp.
The area is excellent for fishing (catfish, walleye, carp, and crappie are common) and offers camping for those planning extended trips. Always check current conditions before launching, as this major river system can have significant flow rates.
