Staunton River State Park offers a convenient boat ramp and access point to the Dan River and John H. Kerr Reservoir, a large 48,000-acre reservoir ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating. The boat ramp is located at the end of Highway 344 off US 360.
The Dan River and reservoir provide ample opportunities for exploration and recreation. Boaters should be aware that the river delta can be disorienting due to the multiple channels, so it's best to familiarize yourself with the area before launching. The reservoir offers 48,000 acres of fishing, boating, and water skiing. Kayakers and canoeists will find scenic river views and the chance to test their skills on obstacles of varying difficulty along the 8.5-mile Staunton River trail.
While the boat ramp is available for use, guests must bring their own boats, as there are no rental options on-site. Visitors should check water levels before their trip, as the ramp may not be accessible if the water is too high or low. An annual boat launch passport is available, but not required.
