About This Access Site
Sumner Lake State Park offers convenient water access via the main boat ramp located at the Main Campground, which features three launching lanes. The ramp provides access to Sumner Lake, a reservoir on the Pecos River situated at 4,310 feet elevation in the grassy plains northwest of Fort Sumner. This is a developed state park facility with ample amenities including a visitor center, 50+ campsites (many with electric and water hookups), showers, dump stations, and RV pull-through sites.

Paddlers and boaters should note that there is no river running below Sumner Dam, so this access point is suitable for lake-based recreation only. The lake's water levels fluctuate seasonally, ranging from approximately 42,900 to 16,300 acre-feet of storage. The park also features additional boat ramps and a boat dock. Be aware that some secondary roads within the park (such as Shady Side) can become muddy and may require high-clearance vehicles during wet conditions.

For planning your visit, reservations can be made through the New Mexico State Parks reservation website. The park is located at 32 Lakeview Lane, Sumner Lake, NM 88119, and offers good parking throughout the facility.
