About This Access Site
Sunset Resort offers a well-developed boat launch on the Ash River near Orr, Minnesota, serving as a convenient central access point to Voyageurs National Park. The facility provides full amenities including dock space, boat rentals (including canoes and kayaks), RV camping with full hookups, and cabins. A grocery store, sauna, and swimming beach are also available on-site, making it a practical basecamp for extended paddling trips.

From this access point, paddlers have direct water routes to several major lakes in Voyageurs National Park, including Kabetogama, Namakan, and Rainy Lakes. The Ash River Trail itself—approximately 25 miles long—offers scenic paddling eastward to Lake Kabetogama. The location is situated 28 miles south of International Falls and 11 miles off Highway 53, about 1.5 hours from the Canadian border.

Note that the nearby Ash River Visitor Center (also called Meadwood Lodge) operates seasonally from late May through late September and is not wheelchair accessible. The resort itself operates year-round and can provide additional information and services at (218) 374-3221.

Ash River Visitor Center is closed over the winter season. The Ash River Visitor Center is located in the historic Meadwood Lodge. Take a moment to explore this historic, rustic building. Watch your head, as some interior doorways were constructed for shorter individuals.
