Third Beach in Middletown offers a convenient cement slab boat ramp for accessing the Sakonnet River near its mouth at Rhode Island Sound. The beach-facing launch provides a sheltered paddling area protected by Flint Point, making it suitable for kayakers and canoeists. Hand-carried boats can also be launched directly from the beach. The site is located across the street from the Haffenreffer Wildlife Refuge parking area, approximately 3.8 miles south of Sakonnet Point.
The access area includes helpful amenities for day users, including picnic tables, grills, a shade structure, and port-a-john facilities in the parking lot. The calm, east-facing beach experiences less wave action, making it an ideal spot for family-friendly paddling and launching. From here, paddlers can explore Third Beach Harbor and the lower Sakonnet River, with easy access to the nearby Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge for extended trips.
