The Douglas County Park boat ramp provides reliable access to Topaz Lake, a 3.5-mile-long reservoir straddling the Nevada-California border about 38 miles south of Gardnerville. This ramp is well-suited for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats, with a notable engineering feature: a 360-foot floating log breakwater anchored by concrete pilings and cable systems that protects the launch area during high winds and fluctuating water levels. The breakwater includes warning lights for safe nighttime operations, making this a dependable access point in varying conditions.
Topaz Lake offers a relatively calm paddling environment with its 1.5-mile width providing good space for recreational boating. The lake is popular for fishing (particularly for black bass), and the scenic shoreline backed by high desert and Sierra Nevada foothills makes it attractive for casual day trips. Note that much of the southern shoreline is private property, so plan your paddling accordingly. For additional amenities and alternative access, Topaz Marina is also available nearby.
The surrounding area offers excellent complementary recreation, including the Faye-Luther Trail System (9 miles of hiking loops) and Indian Creek Recreation Area in the nearby Sierra Nevada foothills, making this a good base for a full day of outdoor activity in the Eastern Sierra region.
