The Gears Ferry access site provides entry to the Upper Mississippi River near Galena, Illinois, within the nationally protected refuge that has served as a critical habitat for migratory birds and fish since 1924. This major river access point accommodates watercraft up to approximately 18 feet, making it suitable for kayaks, canoes, and small motorboats. The refuge maintains 26 boat landings throughout the area, with detailed pool maps available to help paddlers navigate closed areas, sanctuaries, and slow no-wake zones.
Paddlers should be prepared for the Mississippi's significant flow and current—the river averages 685,352 cubic feet of water per second with an average velocity of 11.24 feet/second. The main channel crossing requires intermediate paddling skills and awareness of commercial traffic. Nearby sections offer varied paddling opportunities, from the moderate 3-mile New Albin Landing to Blackhawk Park paddle (1-2 hours) to longer routes like the 7-mile Blackhawk Park to Big Slough Landing section (3-5 hours).
The best paddling season runs May through September. For current conditions, maps, and specific information about amenities and closures, contact the Savanna District office at 815-273-2732 or visit the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge website. The nearby Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center offers exhibits and interpretation of the river ecosystem.
