About This Access Site
Waconda State Park offers excellent water access to Glen Elder Reservoir on the Solomon River in Mitchell County, Kansas. The park features two well-maintained boat ramps (Kanza and Osage areas) with ADA courtesy docks, making it an ideal launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The reservoir is open 24 hours, and good access roads lead to the ramps. This is a reliable put-in location, especially notable because Boller Point is the only other functional public ramp for small craft in the surrounding area during low-water periods.

The Solomon River upstream of Glen Elder Dam creates a large, stable body of water suitable for recreational paddling. The reservoir supports a healthy fishery including walleye, crappie, white bass, striped bass, and catfish, attracting anglers alongside paddlers. Beyond water sports, the area is known for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities—bald and golden eagles visit in winter, while deer, pheasant, and migratory waterfowl are common sights throughout the year.

For trip planning, note that the Solomon River system is a substantial waterway (Stream Order 7, 6,402 sq-mile drainage) with an average flow of 654 cubic feet per second. The reservoir portion offers calm, protected paddling conditions, making it suitable for paddlers of varying skill levels. The state park setting provides amenities and a scenic backdrop for day trips or exploring this Kansas water resource.
