About This Access Site
Walgren Lake State Recreation Area offers paddlers and boaters convenient access to a scenic 50-acre Sandhills lake via a concrete boat ramp and dock. Located near Hay Springs in the Nebraska Panhandle, this tranquil prairie setting is ideal for kayakers and canoeists seeking a calm water experience. The lake is stocked with bluegill, black bullhead, largemouth bass, walleye, and crappie, making it popular for fishing as well. Be aware that a **5-mph speed limit** is enforced on the water.

Boaters should note that Walgren Lake experiences considerable aquatic vegetation growth in late summer and can have low water levels during dry years, which may affect navigation and launch conditions. The 80-acre recreation area provides primitive camping (40 campsites with no electricity), picnicking, and hiking facilities scattered among mature cottonwood trees. A park permit is required for entry. This location works well for beginner paddlers and families seeking a peaceful paddling experience in a remote prairie environment.
