About This Access Site
The Watauga Dam boat ramp provides easy access to the scenic Watauga River and Watauga Lake. This public launch site, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is well-suited for kayaks, canoes, and small motorized boats. The ramp is located along the shores of the 6,430-acre Watauga Lake, which was created in 1942 by the TVA to impound the Elk River, Roan Creek, and Watauga River.

The Watauga River and Watauga Lake offer ample opportunities for fishing, boating, and water sports. The river is characterized by deep blue waters and beautiful mountain vistas, providing a picturesque setting for paddlers and boaters. Several other public and private boat launches are available around the reservoir, making the Watauga Dam ramp one of many access points for exploring this scenic waterway. The area is easily reached via major roads like US 19E, US 321, TN 67, and TN 167, with nearby towns including Elizabethton, Mountain City, and Roan Mountain.
