About This Access Site
Watauga Lakeshores Marina provides boat ramp access to Watauga Lake, a scenic 6,430-acre TVA reservoir near Hampton in Carter County. Located at the highest-elevated TVA lake at 1,959 feet above sea level, this access point serves paddlers, boaters, and anglers looking to explore the lake's clear waters and surrounding mountain scenery. The marina area offers facilities for fishing, swimming, and picnicking, with no restrictions on boat speed or horsepower for motorized vessels.

The Watauga River system is a substantial waterway with significant flow (averaging 1,396 cubic feet per second) and considerable elevation change across its 78-mile length—ideal for understanding water conditions if paddling beyond the lake. Watauga Lake itself features maximum depths of 265 feet and provides excellent conditions for kayaking, canoeing, and recreational boating. The area is highly developed with multiple boat ramps and marinas nearby (including Little Milligan Launch and Sink Mountain Launch), offering alternatives if this ramp reaches capacity.

For extended trips, two nearby campgrounds with reservable sites—Dennis Cove and Cardens Bluff—provide convenient lodging. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the backcountry region, making this an excellent base for exploring both water and land-based recreation in the Cherokee National Forest.
