Whale Pass is a boat ramp and access site located on the northeast shore of Prince of Wales Island, near the head of Whale Passage in southeastern Alaska. This remote location provides direct access to the Pacific Ocean, offering paddlers and boaters the opportunity to explore the scenic waterways and coastline of this region.
The boat ramp is operated by the Whale Pass Community Association and provides access to a state-owned seaplane base, dock, and boat slips. The site is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Point Baker and 39 miles southwest of Wrangell. Nearby, the El Capitan Campground is available for those seeking overnight accommodations.
Boaters and paddlers should be aware of the presence of whales in the area and take appropriate precautions to avoid disturbing them. Vessels should position themselves to allow whales to pass safely, and approach marine mammals with caution, especially when other vessels are nearby. This remote location offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Alaska's coastal waters, but visitors should be prepared for the challenges of open-ocean conditions and plan their adventures accordingly.
