About This Access Site
**Location & Access**
Whalen Island offers a convenient boat launch located at the entrance of Whalen Island County Campground near Cloverdale in Tillamook County. The unimproved ramp provides motorized and non-motorized access to Sand Lake and the Sand Lake Estuary. The parking area doubles as a scenic viewpoint over the water, making it a practical stop whether you're launching or exploring the area. Note that there is a day-use parking fee.

**What to Expect**
Sand Lake is a three-acre waterway surrounded by shore pines that provide natural wind protection—helpful in this coastal Oregon location. The area is ideal for kayakers and canoeists looking for calmer estuary paddling rather than open ocean conditions. Several campgrounds are nearby (including East Dunes and Sandbeach campgrounds at the Sand Lake Recreation Area), making this a good base for multi-day paddling trips. The surrounding landscape offers access to hiking trails and nearby wildlife viewing opportunities at Cape Meares and Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuges.
