Wister Lake offers convenient public boat access via multiple ramps in Wister State Park, located in the San Bois Mountains of Le Flore County. The Wister Ridge facility provides direct access to this scenic reservoir on Oklahoma's only northward-flowing river. The park features lighted boat ramps, an unlighted gravel option, and additional amenities including comfort stations with showers, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. Both motorized boats and paddlers will find the facilities suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, and larger vessels.
The Poteau River feeding Wister Lake is a substantial waterway—a large river (Stream Order 6) with a drainage area of 1,884 square miles and average flows around 2,070 cubic feet per second. The lake's cool, fresh water supports excellent fishing for bluegill, catfish, white bass, and both smallmouth and largemouth bass, making it popular for anglers. The marina on-site offers boat rentals and services, and nearby bait and tackle shops in Wister and Poteau provide supplies. Primitive camping sites are available throughout the Wister Wildlife Management Area for those planning extended visits.
