Description
What a beautiful river with the high rock walls and birds of prey residing in the cliff faces. This is not a good section for the serious whitewater boater but is a great section for the serious fisherman. Most people take out at the public landing at Pembroke instead of floating to Ripplemead, or put in at Pembroke and float to Pearisburg (Bluff City). While in this area, you should see the Cascades waterfall just out of Pembroke. The falls are over 60 feet high and can be reached by a fairly easy 2 mile hike in. Little Stony Creek has been granted a tier-3 Exceptional Waters status from the state and runs beside the hike to the falls. If you like serious creeking, then check out the Little Stoney reach. Mountain Lake, where they filmed _Dirty Dancing_, is but a few miles from here and the Castle Rock and White Rock rec areas are nearby. See Also: New River Water Trail for maps and info.
