Description
This is a short, frolicking run that is very popular on the weekends. Here the gradient averages 13 feet per mile and the paddler will find rocky shoals (up to Class II+), quiet pools and rugged bluffs. A favorite with whitewater enthusiasts, "surfing" is possible at higher water levels -- in fact, there are hundreds of little wave pockets capable of holding a boat in this reach . There are inspiring views at Pinnacle Point Gap and Cathedral Bluff.  Professor's Pool, Blow-out Bluff and Bear's Cave are popular attractions. This section has a number of shoals some of which require fairly good boat control. One rapid in particular, Cathedral Shoals, is Class III at optimum levels (> 4.5 feet) while Daddy's Knee (Class I+/II) has probably "spanked" more people on the Cadron than any other feature. This is also an excellent winter run with many large ice formations on the bluffs in the colder days of the year. ACCESS:   There are now two easily accessed points of entry.  First, we're happy to report that there is  a paddler-friendly property owner in possession of the land at Pinnacle Springs Bridge (Highway 310).  A favorite put-in of the Arkansas Canoe Club this is a great entry site for larger groups albeit parking can be tight.  There is a considerable amount of parking at the gate and more across the river -- just make sure you block neither road or gate.  Also please leave the site -- and Cadron Creek -- better than when you arrived.  The one way to assure this access remains open to the public is to respect the property, the property owner and the flora and fauna at the site. Another option can be found about a mile upstream at Cadron Creek Outfitter's Pinnacle Springs Campground.  Pinnacle Springs Campground is just uphill of the bridge on Cargile Lane and offers streamside access and camping plus cabins, electric hookups and a pavillion for larger groups looking to escape the elements.  Boat rental -- tandem and solo canoes, SOTs, open and closed kayaks, and river boards -- and shuttle service is also available.  Moreover, Cadron Creek Outfitters has several properties on the creek and can offer 3-4 day-long camping and paddling trips for those looking for a longer adventure. Check out their website:  www.CadronCreekOutfitters.com.
